About A Gardener’s Year at South Farm

By Philip Paxman

Increasingly our couples are being drawn to celebrate their Weddings at South Farm because they value the commitment here to healthy home grown food, beautiful surroundings and the building of a vibrant little enterprise with their support.

In response we have decided to launch this blog to track the seasons both in the flower garden and on the farm, and to see how what we grow transforms into what you decide to serve your guests on your Wedding Day.

Month by month we will be recording in words and pictures the passing year and the changing menus the seasons create. Barely a week goes by without another flower or shrub breaking bloom and another crop, each seemingly more delicious than the last, reaching our plates.

We do hope you enjoy the story and it that it adds to your enjoyment of a momentous day in your lives.

What you see today at South Farm is the endpoint of an endeavour started by James’ parents in 1975. We are now on the cusp of another major initiative, this time under the direction of James himself, creating a heritage Arboretum on the 11 acres we purchased last winter that encircles the existing property.

A boundary hedge is already in place and markers define the planting places for a splendid collection of indigenous hardwood trees to be planted this winter.

There is a nice time equivalence here: Philip was 35 when he started planting here, the year James was born, just 35 years ago, and his ambition is to make an even greater contribution to the countryside. Our blog coincides with the start of this plan and will follow its formative stages.
